SofiaHey, here's a question — what happens when gold breaks a major level on the same day the Fed is about to speak?

SofiaI'm Sofia — Rafa's here with me, and today we're going deep on gold, because a lot has shifted in the last 72 hours.

RafaAnd I mean shifted fast. Gold punched through forty-three forty today — that's a level it had been circling for days — and it did it with what traders call conviction. Not a flicker. A staircase of higher lows, then a clean break.

SofiaOkay, so for context — because gold has been on a wild ride — we're talking about a metal that was near forty-seven hundred just three weeks ago and then fell almost ten percent to around forty-two fifty.

RafaRight. So today's move is a recovery attempt, not a new record. The peak is still way up there.

SofiaSo what's actually driving it, Rafa?

RafaWell, the honest answer is: competing forces. And they are genuinely pulling in opposite directions right now. On one side you have dollar strength — the dollar index is holding resistance at ninety-nine eighty-six — and when the dollar firms up, gold tends to soften, because they price against each other.

SofiaAnd on the other side?

RafaOn the other side you have oil. Oil prices are creeping up, which feeds inflation fear, and inflation fear is gold's oldest friend. The market is essentially repricing how many rate cuts the Fed will actually deliver this year — fewer cuts means higher rates for longer, which strengthens the dollar, which pressures gold. But it also means inflation might stick around, which supports gold.

SofiaSo gold is being pulled apart by the same story.

RafaExactly. And Kotak Securities put a number on the downside risk — they said if the Fed signals caution today, gold could test forty-two hundred. That's their scenario, not a promise — nobody knows, and none of this is investment advice. It's the shape of the argument, not a tip.

SofiaOkay, but here's what I keep thinking about. You mentioned AI earlier — there's actually a bigger structural story underneath all of this, right?

RafaThere is, and it's one worth sitting with. AI-related debt issuance this year is estimated at roughly two-thirds of new long-term US Treasury borrowing. Two-thirds. That is an enormous amount of corporate credit flooding the market, and it puts upward pressure on long-term interest rates even before the Fed does anything.

SofiaSo AI isn't just a tech story. It's a rates story. And a rates story is a gold story.

Rafa[laughs] I mean — yes. Higher rates, stronger dollar, lower gold. That's the mechanical link. But here's where I'd push back on the doom framing: higher rates only persist if the economy is absorbing all this AI investment productively. If it is, that's not a crisis. That's a boom with side effects.

SofiaSo the thing to listen for today is the Fed's language around rate cuts — not just the decision, but the tone. That's what analysts say sets the next range for gold.

RafaOne number, one speech. Everything else is noise this week.

DEMO

Hi, I’m Smidge. What are you curious about?

Gold and AI. How are they connected?

Got it. Big picture, or a little more detail?

A little more detail. Something for my morning walk.

Your topics, your pace. We can adjust as we go.

A few good questions.

A little more about the show, the voices, and getting started.

What is Smidgio?

Smidgio creates personalized audio episodes around your interests. Smidge helps shape your listening preferences and answers product questions. Public samples can be explored before creating an account.

Do I need WhatsApp or a questionnaire?

Native listening does not require WhatsApp. Where conversational setup is enabled, sign in, tell Smidge your interests, choose a listening time, then review and confirm your preferences in the app.

How do I sign in?

Choose Sign in if you already have an account, or Create account if you are new. Pick an available sign-in method. Email uses a six-digit code; you can use it if Apple or Google is unavailable.

My email code did not arrive. What can I do?

Check your email address and spam folder, then request a new code from the sign-in screen if needed. Use the newest code before it expires. Email access may be limited to invited testers during the beta.

Can I change my topics or episode style?

Tell Smidge which topics you want more or less of, and whether you prefer more detail, more storytelling or a warmer tone. Smidge will confirm when your changes are saved. During initial setup, review and confirm your choices before they take effect.

Where is my first episode?

Check Today and Library for your episodes and their status. Your first episode may not be ready immediately after setup. Personalized episodes may still be paused during the beta; public samples remain available to explore.

Which languages are supported?

The native app and listening preferences support English and Spanish. Change language in Account where available. Existing recordings keep their original language; changing a preference does not translate a recorded episode.

How do I give episode feedback?

Use the feedback controls on an episode to send a reaction or comment. You can also tell Smidge what you enjoyed and what you would like to hear more of. Check the save confirmation before leaving if your connection is unreliable.

Will my conversation be here later?

Your conversation is saved to your account. The current beta shows up to seven days of chat history. Your saved listening preferences can last longer. If a reply is interrupted, check the conversation before sending the same message again.

How do subscriptions and restoration work?

Look in Account for available subscription options. Review the price and terms in the App Store or Google Play before confirming a purchase. Opening a subscription screen does not charge you. To recover a purchase, use Restore Purchases when available with the same store account and Smidgio account.

Can Smidge delete my account?

Use Delete account in Account and follow the confirmation steps. Smidge can explain the process, but account deletion is handled through those controls. Signing out does not delete your account.

Can I rely on every Smidge answer?

Smidge is an AI assistant and can make mistakes. Ask for sources and check important details. It can help with listening preferences and product questions; for account changes or purchases, follow the instructions and confirmations shown in the app.
